African Portraits

As colonialism in Africa was ending, independent photo studios offered people a way to present themselves without the intervention of the European gaze. These are a few examples from my collection. They are all original period prints. - mostly from Nigeria, but the set includes examples from across Africa. They date from about 1960 through the early 1980s. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of most of the photographers, but some have gallery stamps on the back.
